Hourcrystal is a site-specific hybrid installation conceived for Crystal Park’s wetland conservation area in New York. Centered on a boulder suspended within the forest, the work combines rainwater collection with a timed mechanism, transforming the rhythms of water and time into sound. Rainwater and snowmelt are stored inside the boulder, which releases a single drop into a basin every hour. Contact sensors capture and amplify each impact, allowing its subtle resonance to echo through the surrounding woodland. Through sound and material flow, otherwise imperceptible environmental changes gradually become manifest.
The work responds to Crystal Park’s identity as a woodland retreat dedicated to coexistence with nature. Across its 360 acres of forest, rocky hills, and lakes, the site preserves the landscape of the Hudson Valley while carrying histories of migration, memories of the land, and a vision of cross-cultural exchange. Extending this ethos, Hourcrystal envisions nature as a community with rhythms of its own, creating a temporal order shared by water, time, and the forest—an expression of co-temporality with nature.
