CLAIRE SHULMAN 1926 - 2020

Claire Shulman was an incredibly successful, larger-than-life, tireless driving force for continuous improvement in the New York City Borough of Queens.  For decades, her unceasing efforts brought out the best in the people, businesses, and government leaders of the Borough.  She was trained and worked as a nurse, then went on to be active in the public school system and community organizations.  Claire eventually was appointed Director of Queens Community Boards, and then in 1980 Deputy Borough President.  Her natural leadership resulted in her election and re-election several times as the first woman Queens Borough President, serving from 1986 through 2001.

Following elected office, Claire led efforts for the much-needed revitalization of several Queens neighborhoods.  Always Queens’ leading advocate, she served on the Boards of many charitable, cultural, environmental, and business organizations.

Thomas Chen, founder of Crystal Window & Door Systems, discovered a true friend in Claire as he worked to launch, expand, and grow his business in Queens.  Initially, Claire assisted Thomas to avoid the typical setbacks immigrant entrepreneurs faced.  She advised Thomas on engaging reputable business service providers, avoiding unscrupulous individuals, and pursuing executive business education courses.  In her role as Borough President, Claire ensured New York City agencies worked effectively with Crystal as the company constructed and opened a large new factory in Queens.  Over the years, Claire became the greatest mentor, advisor, and motivator for both Thomas and his son Steve Chen, the second generation to lead Crystal, and her support was treasured as the company rose to national prominence.

Claire and Thomas shared a love of the arts, and both supported many cultural institutions throughout Queens. In 2010, Thomas purchased 200 acres outside New York City and created the Crystal Park art and nature preserve, where he envisioned displays in tribute to the key influencers and supporters of his business success. Without hesitation, Thomas knew this first honorary statue would be dedicated to his dear friend Claire Shulman.
