The idea of using strapping as material for the traditional weaving craft comes from my childhood memories of palm leaf weaving and my experience working at Crystal Window and Door Systems. Unlike the palm leaves, strapping is durable and weatherproof. Meanwhile, from industrial waste, strapping is repurposed to be something precious, creative and fun.

Through the daily observation and the accumulation of experience from years of working at Crystal Window and Door Systems, I’ve found that there are many materials that can be reused in the factory. Hence, I started to collect and experiment on different materials to weave. At first, I used thin aluminum straps. Soon, I found plastic strapping to be a more suitable material to use; it allows more flexibility and possibility in shaping the works. Moreover, the waste from the industrial hole punch has become the eyes of the weaved creatures.

In the beginning, I found tutorial videos online to teach myself the basic weaving skills. With continuous research and numerous trials and errors, I’ve gradually developed the unique and innovative weaving techniques. Through such intricate techniques, several strapping are woven from one end to the other to give shape to all kinds of creations. The should-be-discarded material, strapping, has been transformed to a variety of vivid creatures to embody the idea of rebirth. It conveys the hopes of continuation and limitlessness of life.
